Principal’s Notes

Things are quieter at school this week with the ninth graders and five staff members in Mexico for a marine biology and cross-cultural field trip. Tenth and eleventh graders have important activities going on right here at home. Check out what’s going on below …

Upcoming Events – Division II

Concert

All tenth and eleventh graders will go to a student conference sponsored by the Chamber Music Festival at the Tucson Convention Center on Thursday, March 9. There are a couple of extra tickets; if any parents are interested in joining us, contact Carrie at 623-7223. (Students need to abide by the Community Day dress code on the 9th.)

Photo Day

As part of the World War II Oral History Project, Division II students will welcome the WWII veterans they interviewed last month back to school for a special Photo Day on Monday, March 13. Students will be taking portraits of the vets and photographing the memorabilia from the war-time era that the veterans bring to school to share with them. (Students are required to abide by the Community Day dress code on the 13th.)

What is “Community Day” dress code?

In the 2005-2006 City High School Student Handbook that all students received in August, the school’s regular dress code and the “Community Day” dress code are explained on page 10.

Regular dress code prohibits drug or alcohol images; gang-affiliated significance; ripped holes; and any promotion of racism or violence. When students know ahead of time that they will be on a trip, conducting fieldwork, or hosting a guest speaker in their class, they must abide by the “Community Day” dress code. This is the regular dress code with the addition of wearing a City High School shirt or clothing with no logos, images or messages.

Core Class Feature: Division II Science

The Fruit Fly Experiment is underway. Students are expanding the original cultures and learning some of the basics about the fly population, including mutations and gender identification. As part of their unit on genetics, students will be studying successive generations of their original fruit fly population. They are selecting flies to cross, making predictions on what traits will appear in the next generation and so on, comparing their final outcomes with their predicted outcomes. Groups will be creating a web page to post their findings; more details to come. Check in with Molly Renner mollyr@cityhighschool.org for more information and due dates.

Chess Club

Chess Club continues to convene on an informal, drop-in basis on Wednesday mornings at 9:30 a.m. as it has all year. In addition, Chess Club will now convene on Fridays at 3:30 p.m. as well. Everyone is welcome to join in - all participants, all levels. The Chess Club is coached by parent volunteer David Kelley. (Do you have any extra chessboards at home that are no longer used? Drop them by the school as a donation to the Chess Club.)
