Principal’s Notes
Fourth quarter is a complex time for students and teachers. For some there is the tendency to feel like things are “winding down” toward summer, yet at the same time there is the push to make sure things are “gearing up” for end-of-year events that demonstrate and celebrate learning. There are approximately 8 weeks left in the school year, and we need to make sure they all count. Major projects in core classes like the historic building project (Division I) and the WWII oral history project (Division II) will be due and shared with community audiences in late April through mid-May. Elective class such as drama, band, and mural arts are kicking into high gear in the next few weeks to get ready for production. Students will have skills tested in math and language arts on state assessments. City Works classes will strut their stuff at the City Works Showcase on May 17. It’s important for students to stay focused on course work and to work hard and enjoy themselves as they prepare for culminating performances.

Report Cards Mailed Home
Report cards were sent out to students’ primary addresses on Monday. They should arrive in the mail no later than Wednesday or Thursday. Copies of report cards are being sent out to students’ secondary addresses (if requested) later in the week. Please contact Office Coordinator/Registrar Lynn Schneuker at 623-7223 if you have any questions or need to update contact information.
Parent Volunteers for Power School Pilot
We are looking for parent volunteers who are interested in working with us during the months of April and May to create and access “guardian accounts” on our student management system, Power School. Using the web-based program, parents can check on information about their son or daughter’s progress at school, such as overall grades, specific assignment grades, and attendance. Internet access is necessary. We will look to the parent volunteers for feedback as we prepare to connect all parents to Power School next fall. If you are interested, please contact Carrie Brennan, 623-7223 x203 or via email.
School-wide Testing Day – Tuesday, April 4
On Tuesday of next week, all ninth graders will take the standardized Terra Nova tests, and all tenth and some eleventh graders will take the math portion of the AIMS test. During the testing period, juniors who have passed AIMS will work with staff members Elliott Lax and David Spire on activities to help with planning their senior year internships and will go to the University of Arizona for a full campus tour by an admissions officer. While we will have a special testing schedule on April 4, please note that the school day will be the normal length of 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. We are looking to parents to help us meet or exceed the 98% participation rate achieved during the February/March AIMS days. Contact Support Services Teacher Ed Moyer, edm@cityhighschool.org or 623-7223 x303 with any testing-related questions.
Spring Break Coming Up
Mark your calendars: City High School’s spring break is the second week of April. Students will have no classes April 10-14. Please note that classes resume on Monday, April 17 (unlike TUSD schools which have off on that day).
Lost and Found Deadline
Please encourage your son or daughter to check the lost and found for any items they might be missing – and parents should feel free to come in and check the lost and found themselves as well. All items that are not labeled with an individual’s name and have not been picked up by April 7 will be donated over spring break. All personal items, including larger items such as instruments and bicycles, should be cleared from the office area and alley and taken home over spring break.
Save the Date – April 29
The second annual spring fundraiser, City Highlights, will take place on Saturday, April 29 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Mark your calendars and plan on attending this fun event that includes student performances, silent auction, raffle, food, drink, and live entertainment. Look for a postcard invite in the mail soon. There are many ways that students and parents can get involved in the planning of this event and volunteer on the day of the event itself. One of the most effective and popular ways to help raise money is to make a donation to the City Highlights silent auction. Are you an artist, woodworker, massage therapist, jeweler … What can you create or offer as a service that others might like to bid on? Perhaps you own a small business that can donate a certificate or prize for the raffle prizes. Or maybe you just want to help out by greeting people at the event. However you want to get involved, let us know. Contact Jennifer Rosenthal at jrosenthal@cityhighschool.org or 623-7223 x301.
