Principal’s Notes

We’d love everyone’s help with two events this weekend – the Alley Work Day and the CEDO Scholarship Rummage Sale. If you’re free, you can come and chip in at one of the events on Saturday. If you’re not free on Saturday, you can still help out by donating needed items ahead of time. Both are for a good cause. Check out the information on back for more details.

AIMS Tests Coming Up

All sophomores and some juniors will be taking the writing and reading portions of the AIMS test on Tuesday, February 28 and Wednesday, March 1. Division II students will have a special testing schedule on those days with school hours of 8:30 a.m.-12:00 noon. This means that Wednesday, March 1 will not be a “late start” for students taking AIMS. (Ninth grade parents, please note: Division I students will have regular school hours on those days.) AIMS, which stands for Arizona Instrument to Measure Standards, is a 3-part test with reading, writing, and math portions. Students must pass in order to graduate. Please mark your calendars at home and ensure that students are well rested and in attendance on February 28 and March 1.

Documentary Movie Nights @ Voices

Our next-door neighbor, Voices, sponsors Documentary Arts Movie Night every Friday at 5:30 p.m. (except for the occasional movie night at City High School, like last week). The movie series is designed to introduce young people to documentary films. Admission is free. For more information, stop into the Voices office or call Kristen at Voices, 622-7458.

Core Class Feature – Humanities Classes

Division I – Tucson Museum of Art Experience

Ninth graders will be spending their humanities and City Works classes from February 14-March 1 at the Tucson Museum of Art, working with artist-in-residence Cathy Nash and their teacher Eve Rifkin to explore the current TMA exhibit, “Bird Space.”

Some logistical details: Students need to bring a bag lunch on Thursday and Friday this week. (Those who’ve paid for lunches will have bag lunches provided.) Students need to abide by the Community Day dress code Tuesday-Friday this week.

To learn more about “Bird Space,” go to http://www.tucsonmuseumofart.org.

Division II – WWII Oral History Project

Tenth and eleventh graders spent Tuesday last week interviewing World War II veterans as part of an oral history project they’re doing in humanities classes. The veterans and all others involved – teachers, community volunteers, and Voices’ staff – were impressed with the students’ preparation and composure during the interview process. The next big event with the project is Photo Day on March 13, when the veterans will bring in photographs and memorabilia from their war-time experiences.
