Principal’s Notes
Like much of the country, we took time out of our normal routines at the end of last week to talk about the damage and displacement caused by Hurricane Katrina. In advisory groups, students and staff read articles, looked at images of the Gulf Coast, discussed news coverage, and started to brainstorm ways that we might be able to help. We will continue that conversation as a school this week as many evacuees from the stricken area arrive at the Tucson Convention Center. If you would like to work with the students and staff on this volunteer effort, please contact us.
I hope everyone enjoyed the 3-day Labor Day weekend. The next student holidays will be in mid-November with a teacher in-service day on November 10 and Veterans Day on November 11. Please check the website for a copy of this school year’s calendar.
In the Field
Ninth graders will be visiting the Sweetwater Waste Treatment Plant on Friday, September 9. Students will be on the trip for half the day, during their math and science classes. The trip is co-sponsored with Tucson Water; they provide the van transportation and instructor-guides to accompany the City High School teachers. There is a need for a few parent volunteers; if you are interested, please contact Math/Science Teacher Jeff Hartman at jeffh@cityhighschool.org or 623-7223. Students will need to address appropriately for the outing, abiding by the “community day” dress code and ensuring that they are shaded from the sun, have comfortable walking shoes, etc.
We have received enough tickets to take the student body and teaching staff to the Tucson Convention Center for a public address by the Dalai Lama on Monday, September 19. Thanks to parent Roy Martin for donating 10 tickets (and getting the whole ball rolling!) and to student and staff efforts to secure the rest for free. Students will walk to and attend the presentation in advisory groups. The presentation begins at 3:00 p.m. and will therefore delay student dismissal by approximately 1/2 hour. We will share more information on exact dismissal time in next week’s bulletin.
Office Hours
All teachers are available for extra help every Wednesday morning from 11 a.m.-12 noon. Students are encouraged to come to school at that time to do make-up work, check in with their teachers, do homework, work on computers, etc. This is also a good time for parents to reach teachers.
City High Shirts
They’re in, so make sure your son or daughter picks theirs up. Additional shirts are available in all sizes and styles. If you want to purchase another for your City High School student or other family members, please see Business Manager Kate Goldman or another office staff person.
