for City High School Families

Principal's Notes

The 2005-2006 school calendar has been finalized. It is different in some ways from the original draft we shared in a weekly bulletin earlier this spring. We made changes based on student, parent, and staff input. The school year will now start and end much closer to other Tucson districts, with an August 17 start date and a May 26 end date. Please let me know if you have any questions regarding next year’s calendar.

As we gear up for next year and the growth of the school, one of the things were focusing on is expanding our staff. Brett Goble is coordinating the hiring process. One of the steps in our hiring process includes having finalists do teaching demonstrations along with a follow-up interview. Some advisory groups have been involved as teaching demo audiences during advisory time. We’ve also brought in student volunteers during the electives hour for teaching demos. We appreciate the students’ participation and find that their responses and feedback provide valuable input as we work to hire excellent teachers.

In the Field
Over the course of this week and next, each of the science classes will be doing tours of Armory Park del Sol, a new housing development dedicated to building energy efficient homes that match the historic design elements of the surrounding Armory Park neighborhood. These tours are part of the final unit on sustainability in science. The major projects in this unit include designing an 'environmentally friendly' house of approximately 1500-2000 square feet as well as assessing City High School as a 'green school'.
The schedule for the science field trips to Armory Park del Sol is as follows:
Thursday, May 19 – Core 3 science in the afternoon
Friday, May 20 – Core 2 science in the morning
Thursday, May 26 – Core 1 science in the morning; Core 4 science in the afternoon
All students need to wear comfortable shoes and are encouraged to bring along a hat for the walk. If any parents are interested in joining a class for the trip, please call Lynn at the front desk, 623-7223.

City Works Showcase – June 1
The City Works classes will culminate this year with an evening presentation for parents, peers, and community members on Wednesday, June 1. Students are working in their City Works classes on finalizing their learning from the year and organizing 15-minute sessions that they will run in groups. The “City Works Showcase”, will take place from 6:00-8:00 p.m and will run like a conference with opening speaker and student panel, concurrent sessions led by students, and a closing ceremony. All students will be required to participate in the City Works Showcase. We will have a special schedule on June 1, with the school day running from 1:30-8:00 p.m. We are excited to have as many parents and other family members participate as possible, so please come! If you have any questions about the special schedule or the event, please call Carrie Brennan, 623-7223 x203.

Spirit Week & Talent Show
The week of May 23 will be Spirit Week. The week will culminate in a talent show on Friday, May 27. Students interested in performing in the talent show will need to submit a proposal for their act and participate in a run-through on Wednesday, May 25 at 8:30 a.m.
