Principal's Notes

City High School shares our space and our place-based educational philosophy with a nonprofit organization called Voices: Community Stories Past and Present. Voices has an after-school program that meets here at our shared Pennington Street location Monday-Thursday afternoons throughout the school year. The youth involved in the after-school program produce an annual publication called 110°–Tucson’s Teens Tell Tucson’s Stories. Voices also runs an in-school oral history program at Sierra Middle School. Students have been interviewing elders in the Tucson community about their experiences during World War II over the past three years. They have gathered stories from men and women about their experiences in battle, on the homefront, and in concentration camps, and their now ready to release a book: They Opened Their Hearts–Tucson Elders Tell World War II Stories to Tucson Youth. All are invited to attend the book release presentation this Saturday (see back).
At City High School, we’re especially excited about Voices’ success with their in-school oral history program, because next year they’ll be partnering with us to do a similar project with Division 2 students. Brett Goble will be teaching Division 2 Humanities next year, and he has been working with Voices to develop a high school adaptation of the oral history program for City High School sophomores and juniors. The Division 2 Humanities course will emphasize American history, culture, and literature; interviewing elders and analyzing photos of their experiences will help bring alive the study of our country’s past.

Art in Reality – Spring Show
All of the AIR classes will perform at the MUSE this Wednesday, May 4 at 6:30 p.m. Classes include capoeira, break dancing, aerosol art, yoga, recycled fashion, hip hop dance, karate, belly dance, poetry, and jewelry. Lots of City High students will be involved in the show, so come out for the event if you can. See attached flyer.

THANKS to Parent Volunteers!
The spring fundraiser, City Highlights, was a big success in large part because of the amazing response we got from parents. The top raffle ticket sellers – Cathy Riddick, Ruben Betancourt, and Lynda Hendrell – were all parents. Parents volunteered in many ways: donating their own art for the auction, getting gift certificates for the raffle, selling tickets, helping with preparations on Friday, coordinating food for the event … and the list goes on. Thanks to volunteers Ruben Betancourt (Daniel), Francisco Diaz (Tristan Blue), Betty Yuriar (James Cirrito), Lisa Cuestas (Cory), Lynda Hendrell (Chelsea), Rebecca Hill (Candice), Karen Mathis (Tyler), Cathy Riddick (Jon), Leisa Seals (Miranda), Mary Sjoquist (Paul), Michelle Thomas (Abriel), and Olivia Ure (Ian). And thanks to all of the parents who participated in the event, bought raffle tickets, and bid on auction items. Your presence made our first annual City Highlights a big success! We had a good turnout, people enjoyed themselves, students got to showcase their work and the school, and the board raised over $5000 for next year’s program.
