Principal's Notes

All families should now have received students’ third quarter report cards at home. The grades are meant to be an indicator of a student’s progress thus far in the semester. Permanent grades that go on students’ transcripts are those on end-of-semester report cards only. This is good news for those who did not do as well as they would have liked 3rd quarter, and it’s a reminder to those who did well to keep up the good work. If you have any questions about the reporting or your child’s grades, please contact the advisor or me.

We are excited about the response we’ve gotten from parents and students to help out with the big spring fundraiser happening on April 30. Raffle sales got underway in early April. A few student-parent teams are currently outselling all other volunteers with their ticket sales. If you would like to get involved on any level, please give us a call us at school, 623-7223. Raffle tickets are on sale for $3 each, and tickets for the event are on sale for $20/person. If you can’t make it on the 30th, consider buying some raffle tickets instead (see prizes on the back).

Core Class Feature
SCIENCE: Students are working on a desert garden project as part of their current unit of study. They are using internet and book sources to research various aspects of creating a vibrant environment for plants and animals in our Southwest/Sonoran region. If you have any resources or expertise in desert gardening, share your knowledge with your child. Please contact the science teacher, Elliott Lax, if you have books or ideas to contribute to the project.

HUMANITIES: As part of their new unit “Fictionmania!”, students are now reading a novel of their choice. Humanities classes visited the downtown branch of the Tucson Pima Public Library this week and each student received a library card. Teacher Eve Rifkin worked with students to help them choose a novel to fit their interests and to challenge their reading skills. Students should be reading nightly and working on their reading response assignments.

In the Field
A number of City Works classes are out in the community doing a variety of activities as they wind up the year. The Fine Art City Works class had an opening Friday evening for their exhibit of original artwork at Dinnerware Contemporary Arts gallery. The show will be up for two weeks, so go by Dinnerware (on 4th Avenue across from O’Malleys) and check it out. The Science Center City Works class is visiting elementary schools this Wednesday and again May 4 to do science project demonstrations for younger audiences. On April 27 the class will go to the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum for a field trip for the afternoon.

Public Announcement - Child Immunizations Costs
Beginning April 18, 2005, the Pima County Health Department will charge $15 per child per visit fee for immunizations. Payment can be made by check or cash at the time of clinic visits. Those unable to pay the full amount will be asked to pay as much as they can. No one, however, will be refused services due to inability to pay, and proof of income will not be required. For more information, please contact Dennis Douglas, the director of the Health Department at 740-8611.
