Principal’s Notes
President George W. Bush visited Tucson on Monday, March 21 to speak with a crowd at the Tucson Convention Center about the social security program and his plans to fix it. At the last minute, City High School was able to secure 16 tickets for students to attend the event from the Tucson Chamber of Commerce, the hosts of the presidential visit. It was a pretty exciting opportunity for those of us who were able to attend. Although we didn’t get close enough to shake any hands, we saw Senators John McCain and Jon Kyl and Congressman Jim Kolbe up close. And, of course, we were part of the moderately sized audience (approximately 500) for the President’s speech in the TCC ballroom. Unfortunately, because of the limited number of tickets, we weren’t able to take everyone who wanted to go and we had a few disappointed students. We try to share these opportunities equitably as they arise and will include other students in these kinds of events whenever we can.

In the Field
Three of the humanities classes headed out today to observe all of the activity taking place downtown as a result of the presidential visit. There were many activists both for and against the current administration and its policies in the vicinity of the Tucson Convention Center in anticipation of President Bush’s arrival. Students took field notes of what they observed, including analyzing signs, group’s actions, security procedures, and they conducted at least one interview. Meanwhile, a group of City High School students were on the “inside” of the event, attending President Bush’s speech (see Principal’s Notes above) at the TCC.

Spring Break
Please note that City High School will be closed for a 5-day weekend March 24 through March 28. This year we scheduled the vacation to coincide with Tucson Unified School District’s spring break. The proposed calendar for the 2005-2006 school year includes a full week of spring break. Copies of the proposed calendar were made available with last week’s Weekly Bulletin.

Big Fundraising Event in the Works
The development committee of the school board is hard at work planning a fundraising event for the school on SATURDAY, APRIL 30 from 2:00-6:00 p.m. The event will be organized around the “place-based” theme of City High School, with one of the main activities involving special tours of downtown venues, such as the Arizona Historical Society, the Rialto Theater and the newly-renovated Train Depot. The event will include an open house at the school, featuring exhibitions of student work, live music, food and drink. The development committee is eager to get parents and students involved. We have already heard from a few PARENT VOLUNTEERS. If you too are interested in volunteering, please call or email Carrie (623-7223, carrie@cityhighschool.org). We hope that all of our City High School families will attend the special event. Look for more information soon and an invitation in the mail.
