Principal’s Notes
The next few months are a critical time as we maintain momentum for this school year and, simultaneously, begin thinking ahead to next school year. A number of efforts are under way in planning for City High School’s second year. The proposed calendar for 2005-2006 will be shared with staff, parents, and students for input over the next few weeks and will go before the board for approval on April 7. (See other side.) The enrollment process is well underway and the hiring process for next year’s staff will begin this month. A group of students are working with instructor Daniela Diamente and the school administration to develop City Works classes and community partnerships for next year. Brett Goble, Eve Rifkin, and I had a leadership retreat on Monday to work on next year’s educational program, and our work will continue with the whole staff during Wednesday late start meetings this spring. We’re excited about the prospects of growing City High School to grades 9-11 and approximately 125 students next year.

Spring Break
City High School will be closed for a 5-day weekend March 24 through March 28. This year we scheduled the vacation to coincide with Tucson Unified School District’s spring break. Please note that the proposed calendar for the 2005-2006 school year includes a full week of spring break.

Core Class Feature – Science
In the Nov. 15 Weekly Bulletin, we explained that students have a year-long project in science in which they choose an outdoor study site to observe and analyze over the course of the school year. Assignments related to this project are due approximately every four weeks. The next site study due date is Monday, March 21. Students are required to do 45 minutes of observation at their site and produce a page of notes and pictures from their observations. They also need to collect flowers currently blooming at the site, press them, and bring them to class. Please help students plan ahead for this assignment, so that they complete by Sunday evening.

Big Fundraising Event in the Works
The development committee of the school board is hard at work planning a fundraising event for the school on SATURDAY, APRIL 30 from 2:00-6:00 p.m. The event will be organized around the “place-based” theme of City High School, with one of the main activities involving special tours of downtown venues, such as the Arizona Historical Society, the Rialto Theater and the newly-renovated Train Depot. The event will also include an open house at the school, featuring exhibitions of student work, live music, food and drink. The development committee is eager to get parents and students involved in the event planning. If you are interested in volunteering, please call or email Carrie (623-7223, carrie@cityhighschool.org). We hope that all of our City High School families will attend the special event. Look for more information soon and an invitation in the mail.
