Principal's Notes
Happy New Year to all of our City High School families! Winter break is behind us and we’re back in the swing of things at school. Students and teachers are in the final stretch of first semester over the next few weeks. The semester ends on January 28. Student conferences, similar to the ones that occurred in October with parents, students, and advisors, will take place the following Thursday and Friday, February 3-4 to discuss each student’s grades and academic progress. There will be half-day schedules on the conference days; please look for the mailing that will be sent home this week for more details. Students will receive new schedules for second semester, with the primary change being the selection of new arts and fitness electives. Additional opportunities for students include an intermediate Spanish class, an advanced math section, and an academic assistance period for extra help.

Community Advisory Council
The governing board is seeking parents, students, and community members who would like to participate on the school’s Community Advisory Council. The Council is a group that provides board members and school administrators with input and feedback on the school’s progress and helps with big-picture planning for next year. The Council will meet four times between now and July. The first meeting is Thursday, January 27 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. If you are interested, please contact Carrie Brennan, 623-7223, to learn more.
City Works Updates
As we approach the half-way point of the year, students are gearing up to present their learning and their accomplishments thus far with various City Works projects. The whole school meeting on Wednesday mornings will be a venue for student presentations throughout January and early February. Students in the Fox Theatre City Works will begin the presentations this week, using PowerPoint as a medium to share their research findings. Next week, the Preventive Health City Works class will provide the whole school with a lunch and an accompanying menu explanation and nutrition information.
Students interested in developing future City Works courses have an opportunity to do just that through a new elective being offered second semester. Working with City High School’s Community Partnerships Coordinator, Jennifer Rosenthal, and University of Arizona graduate student, Daniela Diamante, a small group of students will assess community needs, meet with potential community partners, check out field locations, and help with the selection and design of City Works courses for the 2005-2006 school year.
