Principal's Notes
We continue to work hard to establish a positive school culture, encouraging individual students and groups of students when good things are happening and confronting problems when they arise. Last week we held a special whole school meeting to address concerns about vandalism in the boys' bathroom and treatment of school property in general. We followed up with discussions in advisory groups later in the week, reinforcing the school norms that the student body established earlier in the fall. (Please note the school norms listed on the back.) As I’ve mentioned in past Weekly Bulletins, any reinforcement from home is very much appreciated.
Our winter break is coming up! Students have two weeks of vacation beginning Monday, December 20. School resumes Monday, January 3. We wish everyone a restful and joyful holiday season.

Keeping Track of Attendance
Thanks for all of your efforts to call in students when they are out for illness or other reasons. On our end, we are contacting parents each morning when a student is absent from first period and we have not received a call from home. Students and parents need to be aware that students who have 10 or more absences in a class are in jeopardy of not receiving credit for the class. State law mandates that students attend 90% of all class sessions scheduled in a semester to receive credit. Last week, we sent home letters for students who have a high rate of absences. Please give Lynn Schneuker a call, 623-7223, if you have any questions about the attendance policy.
Kudos to the students who have not missed an entire school day so far this year: Tristan Blue, Kim Epperson, Morgan Franz, Candice Hill-Crouch, Paulina Marquez, Daniel Mulholland, Aris Schwabe, Jackie Soltero, Stephen Wheeler. The following students have missed only one full day: Ben Acosta, Ivy Blanchard, Jeremy Hall, Chelsea Hendrell, Sophie Jones, Beryl Kelley, Ryan McGrath, Austin Mills, Daisy O’Rear, Nora Rowland, Paul Sjoquist, Samantha Smith. We are eager for other students to join their ranks next semester.
In the Field
Some City Works classes are being creative with the Wednesday schedule and doing their field work at other times of the day. Parents should look for permission slips if classes meet at times other than the normal school day. On Wednesday, December 15, the Science Center City Works class is going to the Flandrau Science Center for an evening astronomy activity. Instead of taking place during the normal hours of 12:15-3:30 p.m., the class will meet at the university from 5:45-9:00 p.m. taking advantage of the darkness of evening hours. The Preventive Health City Works class is planning a lunch and nutrition presentation for the whole school on Wednesday, January 19. The event will take place at the historic Z Mansion around the corner from the school. The City Works class will spend the morning hours preparing the meal. Instead of convening from 12:15-3:30 p.m., they will meet from 8:00-11:00 a.m., and then host the whole school community from 11 a.m.-noon.
