Principal's Notes

Eve Rifkin and Brett Goble, two founding members of the school, are part of both the teaching staff and the administrative team this year. They collaborated last year to develop the Humanities curriculum and the Science Center City Works class, and have been co-teaching the courses throughout the first semester. Working together with the principal, the two co-directors also play critical roles in the school’s leadership during its first year. As the Academic Director, Eve coordinates curriculum, oversees special education, and is responsible for outreach to prospective students and parents. As Director of Operations, Brett manages the facility, finances, human resources and technology at the school.

In order to focus their jobs to be most effective, Brett and Eve are making a transition in their teaching this month. Eve is becoming the primary teacher of all four Humanities classes and Brett is becoming the primary teacher of the Science Center City Works. Both teachers talked with students about the change over the past few weeks before making the shift, and so far the transition seems to be quite smooth. Please do not hesitate to contact Brett or Eve about the change if you, or your son or daughter, have any questions or concerns. Brett Goble can be reached at 623-7223 x201 or bgoble@cityhighschool.org; Eve Rifkin can be reached at eve@cityhighschool.org or 623-7223 x301.

Holiday Party for Students
Members of the Student Voice Committee and other student volunteers are working with teacher Lisa Lieber to host a holiday party on Friday, December 10. The event will take place in the evening from 7-10 p.m. at the school and will be chaperoned by teachers. Admission is $1 per person. There will be food, DJ music and a live band. We encourage all students to join the festivities!

Please note the permission slip on the back of the Bulletin that requires parent signature if students want to bring a guest from another school to the event. The latest these can be handed in is during the school day on Friday.

Core Classes
Students have been hard at work the past couple of weeks on a number of larger assignments in their core classes. In Humanities, the final typed draft of a literary essay was due Monday, December 6. In Science, group presentations are happening throughout the week as students wrap up the water unit with proposals for a water use plan for southern Arizona over the next half-century. Students should be wrapping up their survey and data analysis projects for Math; the due date is Thursday, December 9.
