Principal's Notes
Respect is a concept we are emphasizing a lot at City High School. We expect all members of the school community - students and adults alike - to be respectful of one another, respectful of classroom resources, and respectful of the school itself. What does being respectful really look like? Respect can be captured in many kinds of gestures: taking care to throw a plastic bottle in the recycling bin, raising one’s hand before asking a question or sharing a comment, helping to organize markers and scissors at the end of a classroom project, listening carefully when a classmate is sharing an idea, following a teacher’s request to get to class or to be quiet, being willing to work with others in a group. None of these behaviors are unfamiliar to any of us; they are the essence of what students are taught from the beginning of their years in school.

With our location downtown, our frequent work in the community, and our shared location with Voices, Inc., students and teachers at City High School have to consider another level of respect as well. How do we exhibit and model excellent behavior in and around the school with other students and adults we might not know? Our actions on the sidewalk in front of school - toward each other and toward passersby - speaks volumes about who we are. Our behavior while we are off campus at places like the Flandrau Science Center, Fox Theatre, Southwest Preventive Health Center, or other community organizations communicates to others what our school is all about.

Students at City High School are working hard to be respectful in school and outside of school. We’re eager to work with families in this effort. Any encouragement or praise students get at home to reinforce this is much appreciated!

In the Field
Last Wednesday students in the Art Studio City Works headed out on foot to tour three downtown-area galleries. They started with a visit to Dinnerware on Fourth Avenue and then went over to Davis-Dominguez Gallery and Metroform, both on Sixth Street. This week during the Wednesday afternoon block period, the Teen Nutrition & Exercise City Works travels back to the class’s partner organization, the Southwest Center for Preventive Health.

Students in the afternoon Spanish and humanities classes will attend a lecture titled "Los Barrios de Tucson" at the Pima Downtown Campus on Tuesday, October 12 at noon. The photographic presentation is sponsored by the Community & Oral History Center at PCC.

REMINDERS

STUDENT CONFERENCES - Conferences with students, advisors, and parents will take place October 21 and 22. Classes will meet from 8:30-11:30 a.m., and conferences will take place between 12:00-4:00 p.m. Please call the front desk 623-7223 or email your child’s advisor to schedule a conference.

ATTENDANCE - If your son or daughter will be out from school, please call Lynn Schneuker at the front desk the morning of the absence. If this is not possible, send a note or call in the next day.

WEDNESDAY LATE-START - Some students are arriving too early on Wednesdays, and others are arriving late. School begins promptly with a whole school meeting at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday mornings. Students should come to school early enough to attend the meeting on time, but not too early. Teachers are in meetings for most of every Wednesday morning and are not able to work with students. Students will not be allowed on campus before 10:00 a.m. Students can come after 10:00 a.m. for club meetings or study time.

TUTORING - A math tutor is available to work with students every Tuesday 3:45-4:45 p.m. A reading and writing tutor is available every Thursday afternoon 3:45-4:45 p.m. Tutoring takes place in the library area on the first floor. Students can also do homework in this area after school.

WEEKLY BULLETINS - Students should be bringing home a weekly bulletin every Monday afternoon. These are regular communications between school and home. Past bulletins can be found on the school website at www.cityhighschool.org.
