Weekly Bulletin
for City High School Families

September 13, 2004

Principal's Notes
We had a busy first week and we’re looking forward to week two. Students are working hard to understand their schedule and get into the rhythm of school. (Please see a copy of the daily schedule on the reverse side.) While everyone shares the experiences of advisory and the core classes - science, math, Spanish, and humanities - students have a range of offerings for the City Works classes and arts and fitness electives. This variety allows each student’s schedule to be more personalized.

Students received and discussed the student handbook in advisory on Thursday. We expect families to review the handbook with their son or daughter and sign off on the handbook to demonstrate that they have read the school’s expectations and policies outlined in the handbook. Please read the attendance information carefully. If your child needs to miss school, call Lynn Schneuker, our Office Coordinator, the morning of the absence.

I am committed to ensuring that parents and families are part of the City High School community. The Weekly Bulletin is one way to keep families informed; it will go home with students on Mondays and be posted on the school website. I also encourage parents to call or email me as questions or concerns arise. The school number is 623-7223, and my extension is #203.

In the Field
Students headed out into the community during the first week of class as part of their studies at City High School. The Science Center City Works class went to the University of Arizona Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 8) to tour the Flandrau Science Center. On Thursday (Sept. 9), participants in the Biking fitness elective visited BICAS, a downtown organization that repairs and builds bicycles for community members. This week the Health Center City Works will take a trip to the Southwest Preventive Health Center on Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 15).

On Monday (Sept. 13), the whole school will be able to witness the presidential campaign up close. Students will go with their advisors to hear Democratic Vice Presidential candidate John Edwards speak at the Tucson Convention Center. This will allow students to see first-hand what civic engagement is all about, as they observe the audience, the speech, the media, and any other elements of the campaign event that capture their interest. Students will be expected to take careful notes of the experience and participate in a discussion afterwards at school.

With the 2004 presidential campaign well underway, this fall will be an exciting time for students as they learn about the democratic process and campaign politics through readings and discussions in school as well as through events such as the Edwards visit. If you have advance notice of any campaign events sponsored by Democrats or Republicans (or by a third party), please let us know.

Facilities Update
Thanks to everyone for being so flexible with the temporary location. The Pennington Street renovations are nearly complete. We will continue to hold classes in the Radisson Hotel during the early part of this week, but we expect to move into the school building by Thursday. We will keep students posted as we get confirmation of the final move-in date from the contractors.
